SARASOTA - Retired golf professional Ron Montressor can see the desire in his players' eyes every time they tee it up.
"What's nice about these girls is they really seem to want it," said Montressor, referring to the members of Cardinal Mooney's girls golf team. "The talent they have makes me look good."
Montressor, who is beginning his eighth season at the helm, said 20 girls tried out, with 10 surviving the final cut. The Cougars are led by senior Kalin Merkley, whose nine-hole average last season was in the upper 30s.
More experience arrives with seniors Baylie Callaghan and Annie Leibold. Montressor also sees promise in a trio of freshmen: Sarah Driggers, Casey Dowling and Sharon Dominguez.
The Cougars, who face Booker on Tuesday at Bobby Jones, will practice this season at The Founders Club in Sarasota.
